Quick Hits: Earthscapes

Earth Skin (Flora), handmade and photographic paper, floral detritus, waxed linen threads, oils, encaustic, and found objects, 32”x32”

Laurie O’Reilly, a painter, storyteller, photographer and mixed media artist, is on exhibition in Earthscapes at Rails End Gallery in  Haliburton, Ontario through Aug. 25, 2019.

Earth Bones, paper, clay, veneer, manipulated photo image, encaustic, oils, pigment, mounted on wood. 20″ x 20 ” 8″

“The seed for this body of work was planted many years ago when travelling as a young adult,” O’Reilly says. “I was emotionally devastated by the sight of garbage being dumped off of a passenger ship into the Mediterranean Sea. It was tweaked by finding lost, forgotten, or abandoned items on hikes to remote locations. It became compelling when I moved to ‘cottage country’ and began to amass a large assortment of found objects/garbage that I collected on walks, hikes, paddles, and camping trips.”

‘Walk in the Woods’ paper clay globe, encaustic, oils, pigment, found items, mounted on wood. 20″ x 20″ X 8″

O’Reilly’s process is varied: “I have photo-montaged, cut and pasted my work, I have created paper clay supports, sewn into painted canvas, reassembled pieces and found objects into new statements, and layered, glued and screwed, onto wooden panels.”
