Canada’s biggest independent bilingual art school, the Visual Arts Centre in Montreal, has created a short-film series called Art Break – this one featuring Plaskett Award winning Canadian painter Chantal Khoury demonstrating ‘dust drawing.’
Process shots and videos of artists at work are hugely popular and also rare, so these videos are a treat. The Visual Arts Centre – and the McClure Gallery – have a long, strong heritage of community outreach, epitomized by this new series. The centre has been involved in the teaching of art for over 70 years, with nearly 4,000 student registrations annually.
Chantal Khoury was awarded the prestigious 2023 Joseph Plaskett Award for painting in the fall. The jury found the depiction of light in Khoury’s paintings visually striking and beautiful, and they were captivated by the fluidity and variety of painting techniques.
Art Breaks open the door to an up-close view of artist techniques
The films from the Visual Arts Centre are focused on artists affiliated with the centre’s McClure Gallery, artists who demonstrate accessible activities that can be done at home or that can simply be viewed for the pleasure of seeing an artist at work/play.
