From the jungles of Borneo to the Niagara Escarpment, this award-winning Canadian artist continues to explore the topography of the natural environment in new oil paintings. Duane Nickerson: Tree , his solo exhibition, is on at Abbozzo Gallery in Toronto through March 2.
“As a boy I used to spend my March break pruning apple trees for an elderly gentleman who owned an orchard of very old trees,” he says. “It is strange how the memory of studying the array of branches and angles, feeling the texture of the bark while climbing the trees for larger chainsaw cuts, slowly leaks out as I study the visual structure of the trees I paint. In a way, the tree paintings are as much about my memory as they are about the actual trees I select to paint.” -from an interview with Regina Haggo, Hamilton Spectator
