This phenomenal photo made me catch my breath, as wire service photos often do.
Distributed in The Associated Press Week in Photos, it’s one example of just how talented the world’s on-the-spot wire photographers are. This shot is by Milan-based Luca Bruno.
They are experts at photos in a flash
I have a wire service reporting background myself, and I know first hand how fast and talented every photo agency photojournalist must be (and how publicly under-appreciated they often are). They are experts at capturing the world’s most fleeting moments under pressure, photos in a flash.
Have a look at this feature celebrating the history of Associated Press wire photos, including some of the world’s most famous shots. (The AP also won an Oscar earlier this week, here and last year a Pulitzer Prize for photography in Ukraine here)

Every time I see a picture of the Hindenburg, in my mind, I hear that newscaster breathlessly narrating the scene. “Oh, the humanity!”
So true, good recall! I can hear it as I read your comment. Thank you.
My journey as a full-time career Firefighter Lieutenant and as a part-time photographer allowed me to capture some incredible images. These images are more than just photographs; they are fragments of reality, captured from the front lines, each telling a story of courage, sacrifice, and the relentless spirit of humanity.
In this dual role, much like the news wire photographers, I’ve not only witnessed life in its most unguarded moments but have had the privilege of sharing these stories, immortalized through my lens. It’s a poignant reminder of the fragility of life, the strength of the human spirit, and the incredible power of photography to convey the depths of human emotion.

That is a superb description of how photos impact us and why the unguarded, historic and seminal moments are so important to capture. Thank you. I love the phrase: “each telling a story of courage, sacrifice and the relentless spirit of humanity”
