These portrait style photographs by Adetona Omokanye underscore the street hawkers’ talent in arranging goods and colors to make them look attractive to potential customers.
Omokanye, a photojournalist based in Toronto and Nigeria, says street hawking is stigmatized in Africa, even though it takes creativity and energy to build something when you start with nothing.
Selling goods, handcrafts or food items, hawkers often advertise by loud street cries or chants and conduct banter with customers to attract attention and enhance sales.
Adetona Omokanye is a photojournalist and visual artist whose work explores Africa’s rich and diverse cultures, capturing its traditions, people, and social issues through the lens of their unique perspectives.
He was recently on exhibition at The Artist Project, Toronto.
