Ryerson University photo-based art student Mary Anderson opens at I.M.A. gallery with Section 265, an image map of 12 cases of sexual assault that took place on Toronto streets last year. The name comes from the Section of the Criminal Code of Canada dealing with assault. (Above: As in all the images, victim first name / location / date)
“Police news releases were researched and photographs constructed to represent the individuals who were sexually attacked. These photographs encourage the viewer to not only visualize an isolated event, but rather a much larger, sociopolitical issue that continues to happen.” –exhibition notes
Funds raised go to the Assaulted Women’s Helpline, a 24/7 crisis line for women in Ontario.
Mary Anderson is a photo-based artist studying at Ryerson. She received a BA in Women’s and Gender Studies from the University of Saskatchewan and is currently completing an MA in Women’s Studies at York University. Academic interests, along with past employment at the YWCA Crisis Shelter in Saskatoon, have shaped much of her work. This is her first solo exhibition.

I just returned from Mary’s art opening. Her images are very moving, stirring, powerful but subtle… when you left the gallery the “parting gift” was a rape whistle….
