California artist Souther Salazar’s densely layered universes are on exhibit at Narwhal Projects in a show called You and Me (and the Mouse in the Moon), his first solo exhibition at the Toronto gallery.
Salazar works in painting, drawing, sculpture and animation in a style that encourages dreaming. Many of the works in this post were produced for Scope Basel, from the artist’s website or his Facebook.

What an interesting style! I love all the master pieces!
Very unique, and so full of detail, agree.
So positive and full of childishly naive energy, which fills my heart with a rainbow-like happiness!
How exceptionally well put!
🙂
I know, they look like they would be award-winning illustrations to an amazing book.
Yes, his website is jam-packed with images that could be books in themselves.
These are great! Fun!
Doesn’t the mouse in the circle of the moon just beg for a story?
the second one’s brilliant too. everything looks so natural, as a normal photo would have been. thanks for sharing.
They’re all so beautifully composed, I agree.
I love these! Childlike and yes whimsical, dreamy… They just made me smile 🙂
I so agree with the childlike. The top image reminds me of a Peter Pan style illustration.
I love this! I’m trying to figure out why. I guess because it evokes feelings of whimsy and it is interesting. It makes me want to just look at the piece and study it because it looks fun, not because I have to dissect anything about it. My favorite is the first one. 🙂
I know what you mean. I think it’s because these are simply wonderful invitations to look. And I like the first one best, too.
Chagall-y joy!
Oh how true!
