Sketchbook Saturday – Simon Cooper’s style evolution

This sketchbook progression shows so clearly how an artist evolves. The style that Simon Cooper captured in his 2014 student sketchbook (above) developed fluently over the span of a decade into his current, compelling blend of contemporary and classic art. Now he does massive paintings and murals – many of them public artworks.

Have a look at these style explorations in the 2014-15 sketchbook project he was invited to join. The Hello Future Archive Sketchbook group invited Cooper (and a select number of other artists, illustrators and designers) to put down his best ideas for future projects he planned. He was already anticipating his large scale work, but hadn’t yet finalized it.

  1. Intense. He wants to, and is saying a lot.
It makes me think of a more refined version of Runt, the artist who painted Lee’s Palace in Toronto.

    1. Great connection. I know about Runt’s mural, of course (pretty famous) but I didn’t connect it until I read your comment. Thank you for that! I just went back and explored it again.

Something to say?
