Drawing Christmas: The Season in Sketchbooks

Christmas inspires artists like these, who take sketchbook in hand to capture the season. Dominique Eichi was in Paris when this small cafe reminded her of the Christmas story.  See why, here.

Food – and the recipes behind it – are frequent subjects. Above, by Nikira. Below, appreciation for a Christmas gift, from the Artists’ Journal Workshop.

There is always shopping at Christmas time.

As winter closes in, we adapt. Below: Walking in Snow

Skating is a big part of the holidays in cold climates.  French artist Cassy1723 (on Flickr) draws a typical scene.

Below Montreal’s Shari Blaukopf accurately captures how we buy trees.

The season ultimately is a time for the blessings of home. Below, from Urban Sketchers Seattle.

As the season closes, vestiges of Christmas remain. Paperwhites are often gifts that bloom into the New Year. Below, how the bulbs grew in for Barbara Weeks.

Then there’s the southern hemisphere, where Christmas is – well – different, at least for Canadians.

NOTE: This is a set of Christmas sketches from the archives that have been posted annually, as I am doing this year. This is the last Sketchbook Saturday of 2023. See you in the New Year.

  1. Such nice photos of the holidays. I smiled when you added what looks like California. Right now, in Chicago, it’s cold, but no snow, so feels a bit like Las Vegas when I see people’s Xmas lights at night.

    1. Yes, feels like early spring here because the wind has dropped and there’s also no snow. I will take it, because it will unquestionably be cold and snowy soon.

  2. they are beautifull, I love how winter, and new year times are represented in arts, shop windows even in mugs of Starbucks. They give such a cozy feeling!

  3. What do I think? I think it’s charming, unusual and I thank you for posting.

Something to say?
