Quick Hits: Remedios Varo

El malabarista o El juglar, 1956, Oil & inlaid mother of pearl on masonite, 35 4/5 x 48 in

This recent acquisition by the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) is by the late Remedios Varo (1908-1963), a surrealist worth knowing.  Raised by a Catholic mother and an atheist engineer father, these two forces — the spiritual and scientific — heavily influenced Varo’s artistic career. A Spanish-Mexican artist who played an integral role in the Mexico City-based surrealist movement, Varo is known for her enigmatic paintings of androgynous beings engaged in alchemy or the occult.
