Flash back to the late 1960s, when Edward Gorey (mid-century illustrator of the macabre) and author Peter F. Neumeyer had a 13-month exchange of letters.
The letters were sent as they collaborated on two children’s books written by Neumeyer and illustrated by Gorey.
Gorey, who influenced a generation of illustrators and filmmakers like Tim Burton, died in 2000. Neumeyer published the letters in 2011, in a book called Floating Worlds.

I see I saw this before. Thing is now I know what I saw. Having done the Adonis post, my eyes have been further opened to this artist. You are right … whimsy shows up on blogs, and it can lead to great places, like here!
Thanks for sharing these. Love them.
Oh, I do love this. And no wonder you also responded to the Oh Canada exhibit of embellished vintage envelopes, here in Vancouver…
Yes, exactly. I could not do this myself. But one of the most thrilling pieces of mail I ever received was at camp, as a tween, from a BFF who could do it, and did, once. I kept her envelope until after high school.
Thanks to you, I visited the Vcr show… and bought one of the pieces!
Oh excellent! What a great purchase.
So unusual…I’ve never seen anything like it.
I’m a big Gorey fan, but I also wasn’t aware of the letter illustrations.
Each a small work of art.
Hmmm I tried to put one of my envelopes in this space but can’t seem to do it. Anyway, try it and see if you like it. It really is fun.
Wonderful. I paint on my envelopes as well, It’s fun.
I’ve never tried it . . .only written additions on the outside of my envelopes.
