Art of the Map

Scan the wonderful illustrations on this promotional map of Europe and Asia, produced in 1956 by Menier Chocolate, and drawn by J.B. Jannot, (aka Jan-Loup). This artist was also an illustrator for a French magazine from the 1950s to the early 1960s, and he also designed scarves for the fashion house Hérmes.

The promotion worked this way: Below the map was a table to stick on coupons found in selected bars of chocolate. The completed table could be sent off to Menier for rewards. The company operated from 1816 through the 1960s. Below, a Menier round-the-world journey with120 images.

Here is detail of the Europe and Asia map, from the American Geographical Society Library at UW-Milwaukee, which holds more than 1 million maps, atlases and other materials.
