Renée Condo is a contemporary artist of Mi’gmaw ancestry from Gesgapegiag, Quebec, whose large-scale works explore the connecting thread between Mi’gmaw and Eurocentric worldviews. She uses the power of the bead to communicate ideas. (Above: Neiaseniget I-II, 2022. Wooden beads, acrylic paint and resin, 182.9 x 152.4 x 5.1 cm.)
Based in Montreal, she was placed on the long list of 25 Canadian artists nominated this week for the Sobey Art Award, the country’s most presitigious for emerging artists. Condo uses “a visual language that is both symbolic and literal, enriched by the history of the bead to carry knowledge, communicate, evoke and express Spirit,” the awards notice said.
Condo is also an artist who sells. Above on Instagram, a set of two purchased for Canada’s TD Bank Art Collection during her recent exhibition at Art Toronto.
