British Columbia painter Mark Heine has been awarded the Haynes Galleries Award, part of the most influential competition for contemporary realism in the world, with his painting Labyrinth (above). Heine, based in Victoria, is the first Canadian to win this title, and one of only nine artists selected to receive it for 2019-2020.
(Labyrinth and other works in this post are from Heine’s series, Sirens) The award is part of the Art Renewal Centre Salon, which had more than 4,300 entries from 73 countries this year.
Labyrinth” will spend more than a year touring as part of a large show, which will first travel overseas to the MEAM (European Museum of Modern Art) in Barcelona, Spain – where Heine currently has another painting on exhibition – and end at Sotheby’s in New York.
The prestigious Haynes Galleries, located near Nashville, represents many of the most renowned artists in America, including the Wyeth family. In October, the Galleries will host a group exhibition, The Magic of Realism, which will include a number of Heine’s other paintings, among works by some of the biggest names in American realism.
