But it’s time to move on. These posts were the Top 10 most heavily viewed and liked, although almost every sketch posted was the favourite of someone.

Note: A decade ago, Canadian Art Junkie had a separate sketchbook blog, which still gets traffic. It’s called Sketches & Jottings, here.

And . . .

Before it was folded into Canadian Art Junkie, the Global Art Junkie blog also carried sketchbooks, including this one which was featured on Freshly Pressed. Mark Penxa’s quirky sketched characters captured more than 5,000 viewers.

Sketchbook Saturday – Becky Cao’s Vancouver https://canadianartjunkie.com/2024/02/10/sketchbook-saturday-becky-caos-vancouver/ https://canadianartjunkie.com/2024/02/10/sketchbook-saturday-becky-caos-vancouver/#comments Sat, 10 Feb 2024 14:12:00 +0000 https://canadianartjunkie.com/?p=47164 Artist Becky Cao pulls out her sketchbook to chronicle her walks, her views, her food and her visits to Vancouver’s seminal places, such as Yaletown (below).

“Japanese Miso paste; pecan butter tarts; sliced pound cake; banana chips… sketching at Yaletown quayside after work.”

“Sketches done at Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Chinese Garden. The peonies in full bloom.”

“Touring around the city with my family and friends today. I challenged myself to pull out my sketchbook whenever there’s a less rushing time. “

“Appreciating the paintings by Emily Carr at Vancouver Art Gallery. There’s so much energy and spirit in these paintings! Love how she painted the sky.”

“Sketching on the second floor of the River Market at New Westminster Quay. It’s fun to do a bird eye view of the tugboats on Fraser River, and the promenade with many people walking around.” Note: See a process post on Instagram, here.

“A 2 hour sketch with my fellow urban sketchers at Pacific Central Railway station. It started to shower as I began coloring, so I just let it go and didn’t color everything.”

“Sketching on the White Rock Bridge. Then a close-up sketch of the cherry blossoms over the balcony.”

“A panorama sketch at waterfront, enjoying the spring sunshine and breeze with my friend. Food journals underneath.”

“I went to Waterfront with my friend yesterday to ride the Fly Over Canada 4D show. We saw two giant cruise ships and I had to sketch one of them.”

Becky Cao is an artist with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master’s of Education. She gives online sketching classes at https://ko-fi.com/caobecky/shop.

Sketchbook Saturday – How to sketch in colour & shape https://canadianartjunkie.com/2024/02/03/sketchbook-saturday-how-to-sketch-in-colour-shape/ https://canadianartjunkie.com/2024/02/03/sketchbook-saturday-how-to-sketch-in-colour-shape/#comments Sat, 03 Feb 2024 14:04:00 +0000 https://canadianartjunkie.com/?p=46982

One of the best uses for a sketchbook is to try out colours, shapes and patterns, as London-based artist Parul Arora does here. There’s a lot of practical full-scale experimentation in these books, featured by Jacksons Art, here.

These stylish sketches about beauty are in a suite of drawings by German artist Jill Senft. She is an illustrator with clients ranging from Bloomberg and the New York Times to Crocs and Geo. But I’m glad she also posts her sketchbooks.
