Canadian videographer Wai-Kin Sin has won this year’s Baloise Art Prize at Art Basel, a prestigious award for emerging international artists. (Above, from the winning video entry)
The winning series – Portraits – consists of five moving-image works featuring deities and fantastical beings, all as commentary on masculinity, binaries, and more. Cantonese and Peking Opera influenced the work, and science fiction and drag have inspired past ones. (Above, more from Portraits)
Born in Toronto and based in London, Sin is on the rise. Nominated for the 2022 Turner Prize, there are upcoming solo shows at the Fondazione Memmo in Rome and the newly opened Buffalo AKG Art Museum in New York.
