Caitlin Doherty’s creations at first appear to be just family snapshots, the type millions of people take every day. Her mixed media works are actually Polaroids from the 1970s, altered with collage and paint to parody the traditional family photo. Doherty duplicates the key figure from each original, and re-inserts it – as in Street Walkers (above).
Using techniques of transformation, exaggeration, satire and appropriation, I aim to create surreal images that hold multiple meanings, provoke nostalgia and lead the viewer to associate through their own experiences. –Artist Statement
