Frans Lotz – Miniature Grunge

Saskatchewan sculptor Frans Lotz works on a coal-fired forge, turns wood on a lathe and collaborates with graffiti and textile artists to perfect his tiny versions of objects we see all around us. (Above: Rico and Stella, painted steel, 6 1/2 x 5 x 5″, 2021) He goes on exhibition May 18-June 10 at Slate Gallery.

Lotz is interested in the relationship between people and manufactured objects in their environment. Rendering gritty objects like dumpsters, tools, and fire escapes in a hyper realistic style, he uses rust stains, scratches, and other subtle details to evoke a narrative.

Lotz, born in South Africa, earned a BFA in sculpture from the University of Regina in 2015 and worked as a studio assistant and printer for the late Joe Fafard.
