Saskatchewan sculptor Frans Lotz works on a coal-fired forge, turns wood on a lathe and collaborates with graffiti and textile artists to perfect his tiny versions of objects we see all around us. Lotz is interested in the relationship between people and manufactured objects in their environment. Rendering gritty objects like dumpsters, tools, and fire escapes in a hyper realistic style, he uses rust stains, scratches, and other subtle details to evoke a narrative.
Lotz, born in South Africa, earned a BFA in sculpture from the University of Regina in 2015 and worked as a studio assistant and printer for the late Joe Fafard.
