Colin W. Davis invites viewers to to explore the complexities of rural life, the nuances of Northern masculinity, and the allure of the fantastic in his solo exhibition Steel Grease Gasoline.
This central work — Death Dealer (After Frazetta), 108” x 72”, Oil on Linen — is an homage to art pioneer Frank Frazetta, as a contemporary look at the relationship between modern rural masculinity and the fantasy art of the 80s and 90s.
Often called the godfather of fantasy art, Frank Frazetta (1928 — 2010) is one of the most renowned artists of the 20th century. His epic ink and pencil drawings, oil paintings, and watercolor illustrations for everything from comics to movie posters have defined the aesthetics and look of fantasy and science fiction for decades.
Here is Davis’s piece installed at the gallery, where his solo exhibition runs to Oct 28. Davis says his paintings utilize brand imagery and influences from Heavy Metal Magazine and Dungeons and Dragons, conjure up childhood memories and ask the viewer to reflect on the modern role of men.
