Aleks Bartosik’s Dark Karma

Aleks Bartosik’s work is on exhibit at the Bartlett Gallery in Caledon, north of Toronto. A previous show at Line Gallery in Toronto built on her “dark Karma” approach. (Above: She was not his Venus in furs)

-Detail, Ice Maiden,  from the Venus in furs series

The upcoming exhibit, Real Human Beings, mounted in conjunction with White Water Gallery, features a series of the Toronto artist’s large-scale figurative paintings, loosely based on the 1870 novel Venus in Furs by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch.

No matter how hard she tries, she always wakes up a monster – acrylic and pencil on drafting papers on board, 5.75 x 21.25 inches

An e-book catalog of her exhibit, A Requiem for Passion at Headbones Gallery in Vernon, B.C.,  focuses on her reputation as “a feminist figurative painter exploring issues of gender and identity and psychological adversity in topical, intrepid and unforeseen ways.”

Eat my artichoke heart out (2009), acrylic on canvas. 12 x 12″

I explore the boundaries between the real and the imaginary and investigate one’s ability and willingness to imagine, pretend, dream and suspend disbelief. I am motivated by people; the particularities, delicacies, sensitivities, beauties and obsessions held within relationships between lovers, siblings/twins, friends, family, strangers, or themselves. – From her artist statement

-She wanted to say everything, (2009) acrylic and pencil on canvas, 48 x 48 inches

Bartosik’s work also covers illustration, film, multimedia and performance.

  1. Aleks – Thanks very much for that. I did not see the show notices. Have updated this post and Marcelo’s post to give info about the exhibition. I love that gallery in Alton. Browsed it many times – but not recently. Enjoy your show.

      1. Thank you for taking the time to look at my work and posting it. I appreciate it very much. Peace and Love. aleks

      2. Where did you see it, if you don’t mind me asking? Did you go to North Bay for the show? I love your blog, I like seeing the art that’s happening through your eyes. Best wishes. aleks

      3. I saw a promo for the Line Gallery exhibition (in the spring, I think) and picked up on your art at that time. Unfortunately, I’ve never seen you in exhibition, only on the web, although I would love to view your work in person So glad you like the blog!

  2. I LOVE these!!! They are just the right amount of uncomfortable in regards to subject and color. I just want to keep looking at them, every time I do I get more and more information. Thanks for sharing this work.
