Rachel Vanderzwet’s exuberant brush work and powerful colors enliven the paintings that made her a winner in the emerging talent competition of the 2013 Artist Project, running Feb. 21-24 in Toronto. She’s one of 14 up-and-comers selected as an Untapped Artist for the increasingly popular show.
A recent graduate of the University of Guelph in Studio Art, she says she strives to instill a sense of movement and energy in her work, “and to actively engage the viewer — pulling them in with hints of recognizability while ultimately leaving them with an abstract painting seductive in its materiality.”

Bold and carefree – beautiful!
Exciting to see this colour and movement. This is what I need to see just before I head into the studio!
Bet she would be happy to know that she inspired!
Very bold! Love these!
Yes, bold on all fronts, right? Color, style, technique.
Wow. So much energy in these pieces!
True. That’s a great observation.
These remind me of Jaap Helder’s work. Fun is right!
Thanks for Jaap Helder. I was not familiar with him and it’s always a delight to get a reference like that!
Lots of fun!!
Yes indeed. Love the colours.
