From rock music, to medicine to light-filled art

Terry Watkinson’s light-filled art extends a journey that began in the North, traversed architecture, barreled through the world of rock music and encompassed a university career in medical illustration. (Above: Stars & Bars) He’s equally at home connecting with inspiring landscapes, drawing body organs, and painting cityscapes.

It’s easy to see Watkinson’s bond with the North, where he grew up in Thunder Bay, but he also does urban scenes, including of Toronto where he first went to university intending to become an architect.  Instead, he joined the rock band Max Webster with Kim Mitchell. Eight years of touring through North America and Europe led to six gold and platinum records.  Later, he earned a B. Sc. in Medical Illustration and taught university level surgical illustration.

From his architectural studies, he incorporates structure, precision, draftsmanship and the science of perspective; from his medical illustration, he draws on his discipline and knowledge of anatomy; and from his music comes rhythm, big gesture, and a sense of lively communication. –Mayberry Fine Art.
