In the hands of Japanese photographer Daisuke Takakura, it means cloning one figure into a riveting medley of personalities, actions and perspectives.

Sometimes, the figures in his surreal series Monodramatic are packed together, differentiated by expression and gestures.

In larger areas, body posture or large movement is the distinguishing factor.

Takakura describes the series as an exploration of the idea of self, how one person sees themselves and interacts with others in many different ways. See more on Takakura’s website, here.

Andreas Martini, a wildly creative German artist, is schooled in architectural design and freelances in art direction, 3D imagery, animation, illustration, set & prop design and sketching.  Have a look at his works on Behance, or his website.  This is one of his surreal narratives in mixed media on a Japanese folding Moleskine.

Hinterlands – Mathew Borrett https://canadianartjunkie.com/2023/04/19/hinterlands-mathew-borrett/ https://canadianartjunkie.com/2023/04/19/hinterlands-mathew-borrett/#comments Wed, 19 Apr 2023 14:35:11 +0000 https://canadianartjunkie.com/?p=40071

Works by illustrator and special effects expert Mathew Borrett have a science-fiction sensibility and a touch of the surreal. He is about to open Hinterlands, a new exhibition at Red Head Gallery in Toronto (April 26 – May 20). I am a fan of his climate-change influenced, dystopian Toronto – although he does lots of other work.

See more on a previous Art Junkie post here.

Mathew Borrett
was born and raised in rural Ontario and graduated from the Illustration Program at the Ontario College of Art & Design in 1998. He has exhibited in Canada and internationally, and works in the VFX industry for film and television in Toronto. Borrett won a Canadian Screen Award for his work on the interactive virtual reality piece Biidaaban, First Light in 2018.

Just a quick look at a new-ish work by the inimitable Ray Caesar, the digital surrealist who captures life in such a creative way. This is called Daily Constitutional (24 x 30 – Edition of 20) and reflects the isolation of the pandemic.
