Quick Hits: Joon Hee Kim

In Your Hands (detail), 2019. Glazed Ceramic, gold lustre.

Joon Hee Kim’s compelling ceramic works are on exhibition at the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery through Sept. 8, part of the former pastry chef’s continuing rise in the art world.

“My sculptures are ceramic casts of everyday objects,” she says. “The components are arranged and then reordered. This results in complex, 3D collages that deal with human relationships, behaviours and emotions.”

You Will Do What You Say, 2018. Glazed white sculptural clay heads with gold lustre eyelids and floral head coverings.

An award-winning ceramist who was an art director in her native South Korea, she came to Canada and took patisserie studies at Le Cordon Bleu in Ottawa. But she switched careers, graduating from Sheridan College in Oakville, and the Chelsea College of Arts in London, England.

  1. Always love hearing stories of someone who studies one area and realizes that it is not where their passion is and switches studies/careers. LOL – I’m still trying to do that.

Something to say?
