Los Angeles abstract artist Alex Couwenberg has his first solo exhibition in Canada at Jennifer Kostuik Gallery in Vancouver.
La Fonda, 2012: Acrylic on canvas over panel, 46 x 48 x 1.75 inches.
Couwenberg’s work is propelled by his lifelong immersion in Southern California culture.
The paint, pin striping, and finish associated with hot rod and custom car culture all show up as influences in his work. Mid-century design, furniture, and architecture, surf and skateboard culture, color and graphics, geometric and hard-edge abstraction, and the love of craft and technique all fuel the work. -Gallery Notes
This film by Eric Minh Swenson chronicles the making of La Fonda, and details Couwenberg’s influences and work style.

Saw Couwenberg’s artwork in person at Sopa Fine Arts in Kelowna, years ago and have been a huge fan ever since!
Yes, a very intriguing artist, no? I’m a huge fan of Sopa, which I browse frequently. Thanks for taking the time to leave the comment.
Hope the show is still there by the time I get home to Vancouver. Would love to see them up close.
I hope you do get to see it, then. Thanks very much for taking the time to stop by.
Love his work!
Yes, pretty interesting approach. Lots of thick enamel layers under the ribbing. Thanks.
